If you know you know.
And if you know, you’re one of us.
If you want to know, you’ll need to become one of us.
In fact, in the simple act of gaining this knowing, you become one of us.
But if too many people know, it stops being an effective way to identify “us”.
So we guard the knowing with phrases like “IYKYK”, which also means, “We’re not going to tell you, you have to figure it out.”
And when too many people figure it out, we abandon the knowing and create new ones.
Because we all yearn to belong.
And to belong, you have to know.
Prompts for reflection:
What does your community know that those outside of the community don’t?
How is “knowing” preventing people from accessing your community?
Where are the opportunities to add more “knowing” to your community?
This is a short post, or what I call a “Seed”. Seeds are simple ideas and reflections that may grow into something bigger. I publish seeds fairly frequently, as often as they sprout.
You can update your subscription here if you prefer not to receive Seeds, but still want to receive my long-form Essays.
